  209.        The NFL Tracker represents many, many hours of hard work in
  210.        terms of programming, data gathering and entry, testing, and
  211.        documenting.  Registered copies will be compiled with a serial
  212.        number that will be displayed on all of the menus in the lower
  213.        left corner.  A serial number set to zero is an indication that
  214.        the program is a demonstration version for unregistered users
  215.        only.  This version of the program will only carry history for
  216.        games played during the 1991 season and beyond.  An unregistered
  217.        version will be fully functional, however, to kindle an interest
  218.        in registering the product, a reminder screen will be displayed
  219.        prior to invoking each and every function within the program.

  221.        Upon registration you will recieve a diskette with all of
  222.        the required files along with further detail about the formulas
  223.        used for selecting the predicted winners.  The databases will
  224.        be expanded to include 1983 thru 1991 schedules and results.

  272.        Product Overview
  273.        ----------------
  274.  
  275.        The NFL Tracker (T.N.T.) is a database program for tracking the
  276.        results of NFL football games.  Features include two versions
  277.        of mathematical computer prediction programs.  The program will
  278.        accept and log predictions for up to 36 participants with up to
  279.        four players at a time in a full display mode.
  280.  
  281.        The only data entry requirements are the annual schedule and
  282.        weekly predictions accompanied by the results.  After the week's
  283.        scores have been entered and subtotals tabulated, the results can
  284.        be displayed graphically and numerically.   Other features include
  285.        the incorporation of playoff games.  Player's predictions and
  286.        results, as well as the computer generated predictions, are
  287.        tracked all the way through to the Super Bowl.
  288.  
  289.        The T.N.T. databases include all of the games and scores for the
  290.        1983 thru 1991 seasons.  This information serves not only as a
  291.        historical reference, but is also an integral part of the pre-
  292.        diction process.
  293.  
  294.        The system has recently been enhanced to support a mouse.  Mouse
  295.        support extends throughout the menus and most of the screens.
  296.        Currently, the only printer that is supported is a standard Epson-
  297.        like dot matrix printer.
  298.  
  299.        The future undoubtedly belongs to a Windows rewrite, however, unlike
  300.        many commercial software development companies, Micro Moonlighters
  301.        will not attempt to predict a product release date.
  302.  
  303.        Installing T.N.T.
  304.        -----------------
  305.  
  306.        The system requirements are a minimum of 350K of RAM.  A high
  307.        density diskette will be required to hold all of the programs
  308.        and the data.  Obviously, a hard disk will be the most desirable
  309.        storage medium for the data files, however, T.N.T. can be run
  310.        from floppy disk drives.
  311.  
  312.        If installing T.N.T. sounds like it could be difficult or
  313.        dangerous, rest assured, it's not.  The system can be installed
  314.        switching to the floppy drive which contains The NFL Tracker
  315.        distribution disk and typing INSTALL.  If not already present,
  316.        it will create subdirectory C:\TNT and execute the self-extracting
  317.        compressed format file T-N-T.EXE.  If preferred, this same process
  318.        can be undertaken manually by copying T-N-T.EXE to any directory
  319.        and entering T-N-T at the DOS prompt.  The T-N-T.EXE file may now
  320.        be deleted since TNT.EXE is the executable file which invokes The
  321.        NFL Tracker.

  404.        Discussion of System Standards
  405.        ------------------------------
  406.  
  407.        The system has been designed to keep a consistent "look and feel"
  408.        throughout.  It is easily navigated via dynamic light bar menus
  409.        using either a mouse or the keyboard.  Often information will
  410.        be displayed without a prompt.  When finished viewing the data,
  411.        simply strike any key or click the mouse and control will return
  412.        to the menu system.
  413.  
  414.        Throughout the system, data entry screens will be prompting with
  415.        "Save, Change, or Quit".  The Save option will cause the data
  416.        just entered to be physically stored to disk and control usually
  417.        passes to another screen of menu.  The Change option will return
  418.        the cursor to the first data entry field and the values previously
  419.        entered may be changed.  The Quit option will return control to the
  420.        previous menu and the changes entered on the screen are NOT saved
  421.        to the database.

  423.        Screens with a scrollable list of record entries can be modified
  424.        consistently in the following manner.  If a field is to be changed,
  425.        the cursor must be moved there first using the arrow keys.  Upon
  426.        moving the cursor to the field to be modified, strike the Enter
  427.        key.  The item to be modified will now display a flashing cursor.
  428.        Modify the field and hit Enter again to have the changes accepted.
  429.        To add a record simply scroll past the last line of data records.
  430.        The data may now be keyed and the record will be saved. The Escape
  431.        key will return control to the menu system and keep all changes
  432.        that have been entered.
  433.  
  434.        The system has been designed to be flexible, yet very easy to use
  435.        and maintain.  The subtotaling routines will always subtotal an
  436.        entire season to make sure that corrections to earlier week's
  437.        data will be reflected throughout all the databases.  Database
  438.        integrity was deemed more important than eliminating the redundant
  439.        calculations.  It is virtually impossible to enter data into the
  440.        databases that cannot be corrected then reflected in the summary
  441.        totals simply by subtotaling.  The system is flexible enough to
  442.        allow postponement of subtotaling until the most convenient time,
  443.        but prediction results will not be available until the subtotaling
  444.        has been completed for that week.  Sixteen weeks of data with all
  445.        four participants requires less than 10 minutes to subtotal on an
  446.        AT class machine with an average speed hard disk.

  448.        The program should always be exited via navigation of the menu
  449.        system back to DOS.  To keep the databases intact, avoid stopping
  450.        the machine in any manner while using T.N.T., especially when
  451.        database update routines are running.  The results will be un-
  452.        predictable.

  473.        When the program is first used, it will be necessary to add your
  474.        name and the other participants to the system.  The main menu
  475.        option labeled "Database Queries and Updates" will return the
  476.        following screen.  Use your cursor keys to select the menu
  477.        option to "Add Participants".

  497.        initials.  Until a participant is entered here, the other portions
  498.        of the system will be inaccessible to them.  A person's initials
  499.        are optional, however, to appear on the menus that have graphical
  500.        displays, unique initials must be entered.  This will put the player
  501.        into a priveleged status and provide additional information throughout
  502.        The NFL Tracker.  There are screens to delete and change participant
  503.        information as well, however, if participants are deleted their entire
  504.        history of predictions will be lost.

  539.        Although the current schedule may have already been added, the next
  540.        requirement would normally be to add the schedule for the coming
  541.        year.  This is accomplished by selecting the appropriate option
  542.        from the "Database Queries and Updates" option on the main menu.

  544.        The system will respond by asking for the season to be entered
  545.        and the number of weeks that are in that season.

  605.        Standard mouse double-click or Enter key while highlighted
  606.        will cause the team to be selected and inserted into the
  607.        schedule in the next available slot.  Once an entry is made it
  608.        is impossible to go backwards and fix it during this initial
  609.        pass, so the only way to correct errors is to go completely
  610.        through the remaining entries and select Change when prompted.
  611.        Selecting Quit at the following prompt will abandon any changes
  612.        made on the current week of the schedule, but retain changes
  613.        made in earlier weeks.  Save will cause the schedule database
  614.        to be updated with the week's games and will provide another
  615.        screen for the next week's games, if another week exists in
  616.        the schedule.  The Next option allows for a quick review of
  617.        the schedule without incurring the delay caused by saving the
  618.        data.  When reviewing an existing schedule, be careful not to
  619.        use the Save option for weeks that have already been played or
  620.        you will lose the results (scores, player predictions, etc.)

  668.        Entering Weekly Predictions
  669.        ---------------------------

  671.        To track their success at predicting the outcome of NFL Football
  672.        games, each player must enter predictions.  Before doing so though,
  673.        each of the players may want to review some of the information
  674.        available to them.  The computer prediction programs should be run
  675.        prior to entering player predictions.  Those teams will then be
  676.        displayed in the respective columns.  Those involved with football
  677.        pools will be able to use the Favored Percent column which will
  678.        indicate which games will be strategic in terms of the outcome of
  679.        the weekly football pool.  Teams involved in a close contest may
  680.        require further analysis by viewing their game history via the option
  681.        to "Review Individual Team Statistics".

  683.        This screen was designed to make data entry somewhat faster and less
  684.        tedious, therefore, mouse users will need but only one click to select
  685.        the teams of choice which then becom highlighted.  Without a mouse,
  686.        you will find a cursor highlighted in magenta which will serve as the
  687.        guide when selecting teams.

  936.        will be presented with an overview of the team of interest.
  937.        The statistics at the top of the page are for the currently
  938.        selected season or the default season from startup.  The game
  939.        history section from the bottom section serves a dual purpose.
  940.        It will display at least the last eight games that the team has
  941.        played, the outcome, won or lost, and the score.  The @ sign
  942.        indicates it was an away game.  The blocks which appear under
  943.        a player's initials signify a successful prediction by that player.
  944.        Lack of a block beside the game is an indication that the outcome
  945.        was not correctly predicted.  If the team name is highlighted, it
  946.        means that the game was played in the previous season, therefore
  947.        it will not be reflected in the statistics at the top of the screen.

  1067.        The calculations are run for divisional/non-divisional, home/
  1068.        visitor, and overall total statistics.  The average column will
  1069.        contain the mean of the three breakdowns.  The computer will
  1070.        select the team which has a better score in at least two of the
  1071.        three categories.  Therefore, the average may actually be lower
  1072.        for the team that the computer selected.  If there is a tie in
  1073.        one of the categories, the computer will highlight the team with
  1074.        the highest average.  If the average is also equal, the home team
  1075.        will be selected.

  1077.        The computer prediction programs will use at least eight weeks
  1078.        of historical information, drawing from last season's regular
  1079.        season games if necessary.  As the season progresses, it will
  1080.        use all of the data from the current season.  The prediction
  1081.        programs are useful for identifying the majority of the teams
  1082.        which are favored to win.  However, since they are strictly
  1083.        based on numbers from past performance, other critical factors
  1084.        such as injuries, weather, and so on, are not taken into account.

  1727.        From time to time, NFL teams seem to migrate.  This event occured
  1728.        between the 1987 and 1988 season when the St. Louis Cardinals
  1729.        took off for Phoenix.  The NFL Tracker can accomodate such changes,
  1730.        but care must be taken to ensure that the starting season for the
  1731.        new team is one higher than the ending season and that they are
  1732.        entered accurately.  The mascot name can be changed with much less
  1733.        risk, however, cities with more than one football team, such as
  1734.        L.A. or N.Y. must include the mascot within the team name itself
  1735.        so that they may be uniquely identified.  If experiencing difficulty
  1736.        in updating this screen, see the discussion of system standards
  1737.        for further assistance.

  1740.        Subtotaling
  1741.        -----------
  1742.  
  1743.        Subtotaling is needed to get the weekly results summarized.  This
  1744.        summarization is necessary to display the data quickly without
  1745.        redundant recalculations.  The subtotaling will always be done
  1746.        for only the current season's data and only for active players.
  1747.        The programs will always begin processing data from the beginning
  1748.        of the season, therefore, as the season progresses the subtotaling
  1749.        will take longer.  Prediction results and weekly scores will not
  1750.        be reflected until subtotaling is completed.

  1753.        Changing to a Different Season

  1756.        The NFL Tracker will start up with the current season provided that
  1757.        the system clock is set correctly.  This season may be changed at
  1758.        any time from the Database Queries and Updates Menu, to review
  1759.        different seasons. Changing to a season that has not had a schedule
  1760.        built for it will not be allowed.  Non registered versions of The
  1761.        NFL Tracker will not allow the season to be changed to a season
  1762.        beyond 1991.

  1793.        Post season play can be tracked with The NFL Tracker, but because
  1794.        the rules for getting into the playoffs are so complex, very few
  1795.        assumptions are made about the candidates.  The weekly itinerary
  1796.        of playoff games must be entered each week, again, with the
  1797.        visiting team displayed over the home team.  The individual team
  1798.        statistics and the computer prediction programs will only display
  1799.        information from regular season games.  The bar charts for predic-
  1800.        tion results will look different because they only account for post
  1801.        season play.  Most of the activities that were once done from the
  1802.        main menu, must now be done from the playoff menu.  The playoff
  1803.        menu requires further menu navigation depending on which post
  1804.        season games are of interest.

  1925.        As discussed in the systems standard section, it will be very
  1926.        difficult to create permanent problems with the database.  The
  1927.        schedule is the heart of the system and any changes in that
  1928.        area will require that portions of the system would have to be
  1929.        rerun.  For example, a game may be entered twice for a given
  1930.        week and one game omitted.  The computer predictions may have
  1931.        been run and the results stored.  When entering player predic-
  1932.        tions, it becomes apparent that there is a mistake.  The schedule
  1933.        is changed, yet when reentering the player predictions, the
  1934.        computer predicts that a team not even in the contest will win.
  1935.        Correct the database by running the computer predictions again
  1936.        then return.  The problem will be fixed.  Subtotaling will always
  1937.        correct all databases when an invalid score has been entered.

  1942.        Although The NFL Tracker has been rigorously tested, there will
  1943.        undoubtedly be some undiscovered "bugs".  When they are located,
  1944.        please notify Micro Moonlighters in writing and, if you have
  1945.        purchased a registered copy every attempt will be made to correct
  1946.        the problem.  Please include your name, serial number, a detailed
  1947.        description of the problem, and, if possible, a diskette with
  1948.        the databases and indexes.  Databases that have been corrupted
  1949.        by being altered outside of The NFL Tracker will not be repaired.
